Capital One Cup Second Round

The Premier League clubs enter at this stage, unless they are competing in the Champions League or Europa League, as the competition starts to gain momentum and interest. If a match finishes a draw then it is decided on penalties, with the winners progressing to the next round.

Second Round Results 2012/13

The pick of the second round matches came at the Britannia Stadium where Swindon conjured up a thrilling 4-3 victory away to Stoke, with James Collins scoring a last-gasp winner to hand the newly promoted League One side a memorable win. Meanwhile Fulham lost to Sheffield Wednesday, West Brom came from behind to beat Yeovil, Reading beat Peterborough 3-2 and Burton stunned Leicester. On Wednesday Everton thrashed Leyton Orient 5-0 at Goodison Park, with new signing Kevin Mirallas bagging a brace. In the final second round match Wolves came away from Northampton with a 2-1 win.

2011 Carling Cup Results - Premier League new boys suffer embarrassing Cup defeats

Premier League new boys Norwich City, QPR and Swansea were all dumped out of the Carling Cup by lower league opposition. The Canaries were thrashed at home 4-0 by MK Dons while Neil Warnock's men also lost at home, 2-0 to Rochdale and Swansea lost 3-1 away to League Two side Shresbury. Sunderland also lost out to a lower league team as they were defeated 1-0 by Championship side Brighton in extra time. Aston Villa, West Brom and Wolves all won convincingly while Leicester City and Cardiff both won thrillers and Leeds scraped past Doncaster in the Yorkshire Derby.

On Wednesday Liverpool avoided a potential banana skin by beating Exeter 3-1 while League Two's Aldershot shocked West Ham by coming from behind to beat the Championship 2-1 at Upton Park. Blackburn Rovers and Everton beat Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United by 3-1 scorelines while Bolton scraped past Macclesfield. In Thursday's game Newcastle avoided an early exit at the hands of League One's Scunthorpe with a late goal in extra time.
