2011 Carling Cup Winner - Birmingham City

Arsenal 1-2 Birmingham City

Birmingham City clinched the Carling Cup in dramatic fashion when a rare defensive mix-up by Arsenal allowed Obafemi Martins to tap in the winner in the dying moments of the match. Whilst the Birmingham supporters exploded in a moment of pure ecstasy, in stark contrast the Arsenal fans dropped their heads as their quest for a first trophy in six years continued.

The cup win was Birmingham's first in the competition since they won it back in 1969 and meant that the club secured a place in the 2011/12 Europa League. Nikola Zigic put the underdogs in front in the 28th minute, only for Robin van Persie to restore parity six minutes before half-time. The game looked to be heading for extra-time until a shocking mix-up between Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny and defender Laurent Koscielny gifted on-loan City striker Martins the easiest of tap-ins to win his side the cup in the 89th minute.
